G’day Ms Pitt.
Loved your piece in the SMH today. Really made me think. I think what you say is very true, and it needs to be said.
But … as a music educator [formerly in crowd control, which some people call high school music teaching, and now a piano and music theory teacher] I have seen some students who are never going to make it and who are setting themselves up for disappointment.
In crowd control, I noticed some teachers telling too many students they were geniuses, too many students they were outstanding visual artists, too many kids in the school musical they were going to be a star some day.
I think there is a place for finding out where you fit in the scheme of things, not by being told you can’t do anything, but by being given a realistic assessment. But not at the age of six! And not to discourage people from achieving the best they can be.
